Beyond the Bottom Line: Finding Your “Why” in Business Ownership
When most people flirt with the idea of leaving the corporate world to buy or start a business, the initial conversation usually revolves around the "What" and the "How." What franchise should I buy? How do I finance it? What is the ROI?
These are critical questions, but at Broken Ladder Advisors, we believe they are the secondary questions.
The most important question—the one that will determine whether you are energized on Monday mornings or dreading them—is Why.
The financial upside of business ownership is obvious. But money alone is rarely enough to sustain a business owner through the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship. To find the right fit, you have to dig deeper. You have to understand your intrinsic motivation.
The Illusion of "Be Your Own Boss"
"Freedom" and "Money" are the standard answers when we ask candidates why they want to own a business. But those are outcomes, not drivers.
If your business aligns with your core values, the money and freedom become the result of doing work that fulfills you. If the business fights against your nature, the money won't matter because you will feel trapped—just in a different office.
Real motivation usually stems from deeper sources:
Service: The genuine desire to help others solve problems.
Provision: Building a legacy and safety net for your family.
Community: Becoming a pillar in your local area and creating jobs for your neighbors.
Autonomy: The desire to create your own culture rather than fitting into someone else’s.
The Science of Motivation: Driving Forces
We don't guess at these motivations. We believe in using data to help you "find yourself" so you can find the right business.
One of the tools we utilize is the a driving forces assessment. Based on the works of Eduard Spranger, this framework looks beyond behavior (how you act) and uncovers motivation (why you act). It identifies the specific drivers that move you to action.
Why does this matter for business ownership? Because a mismatch here is fatal to long-term success.
The Alignment Test
Imagine two different prospective business owners:
1. The "Altruistic" Driver
Motivation: Driven by a desire to help others and realize human potential.
The Mismatch: If this person buys a high-volume, transactional business where efficiency is valued over customer interaction (like a vending machine route or a purely digital drop-shipping model), they will likely feel empty and burnt out, even if the business is profitable.
The Right Fit: They belong in senior care, education, or high-touch B2C services where they can see the impact of their work daily.
2. The "Resourceful/Utility" Driver
Motivation: Driven by practical results, ROI, and efficiency.
The Mismatch: If this person buys a "passion project" business with low margins but high community impact, they will likely become frustrated by the lack of financial efficiency.
The Right Fit: They thrive in B2B services, expense reduction consulting, or scalable operational franchises.
Different Businesses for Different Motivations
There is no "perfect" business, but there is a perfect business for you.
When you own a business that aligns with your driving forces, the friction disappears. The late nights don't feel like a burden; they feel like an investment. The challenges don't feel like roadblocks; they feel like puzzles you are eager to solve.
If you are driven by Knowledge: You might thrive in a specialized consulting firm or technical services business.
If you are driven by Structure/Traditional: You might thrive in a proven franchise system with rigid SOPs and a clear history of success.
If you are driven by Power/Individualistic: You might need a business with massive scaling potential where you can lead a large team and dominate a market.
